テーマ：“Foreign Multinationals, Intermediate Imports, and Plant Exports in Thai Manufacturing”

概要：This paper will investigate how ownership by foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) and imports of intermediate input contributed to exports by Thai manufacturing plants in 2006 and 2011. Previous research for 1996 and 2006 suggests that heavily-foreign MNEs with foreign ownership shares of 90 percent or more (in 2006) and wholly-foreign MNEs (in 1996) accounted for most exports by manufacturing plants and had higher mean export propensities than other majority- or minority-foreign MNEs or local plants. Ratios of plant imports to all intermediate inputs shares of imports by manufacturing plants also tended to be largest in MNEs with large foreign ownership shares. This paper will further investigate how foreign ownership, exporting, and importing were related using recent census data for 2006 and 2011. Estimates will be performed in large heterogeneous samples of all manufacturing plants combined and 20 smaller, more homogeneous, industry-level samples. Previous estimates with the 1996 and 2006 data indicate that MNE-local differentials in trade propensities differed substantially among industries, suggesting it is important to account for inter-industry heterogeneity as much as possible.
